For reference, this was written 1 day after the second atomic bomb was dropped, and about 3 weeks before Japan’s surrender.

Thank you for sharing this. My grandma destroyed all her old letters. Makes me wonder if they were too steamy for the family. Haha.

If this isn’t the best kind of treasure…how lovely to have such a cherishable and intimate piece of family history 💝

    4. I love how this letter almost exactly as written has been sent to countless addresses over the years by young servicemen and women over the years. I knew it wasn’t mine because the penmanship was on point but the sentiments expressed are so poignant but similar. The indoctrination machine is constant. I like that. The letter home constant.

You have revealed a wholesome moment of your family. Who would’ve thought of finding such letters.

If anyone is interested what it says heres what chatgpt says is written:

      U.S. Naval Training Center
      Bainbridge, Maryland
      August 10, 1945

      Dear Mr. King,

I guess you thought I’d forgotten all about you, but I have been pretty busy up here. I have had a vaccination and three shots so far. The shots are in the arm for typhoid, smallpox, etc. They make your arm pretty sore for a while.
We are kept busy with classes and etc. all day. After supper which is about 6:00 we have to wash clothes and clean our barracks. I just can find time to write for once every night.
The lights go out at 9:30 and we have to get up at 5:30 every morning. We also have to stand a four-hour watch about twice a week.
The worst part about this Navy is being away from the family. I sure do miss them. I also miss going out to see you too.
They feed us pretty good but it just doesn’t compare with the food I got at home.
