Margaret Hamilton’s casting in “The Wizard of Oz” is fascinating! Initially auditioning for Glinda, she was cast as the Wicked Witch of the West. Her memorable performance combined menace and humor, making the character iconic and leaving a lasting impact on her career!!!!

She still scares the heck out of me.
It’s like my fear of her is hard-wired going to back to my childhood.
Intellectually I know it’s irrational but it’s there all the same.

She went from teaching to playing one of the most iconic villains ever. I mean, who knew the Wicked Witch of the West was actually a schoolteacher? It’s crazy how she nailed that role, yet she was super nice in real life. I love how she showed kids on *Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood* that she was just acting. Talk about a glow-up from Miss Gulch to a Hollywood legend!

At the time that she was cast in WoO, someone told her that she was big enough that she could get $2500/month, so why would she settle for $2000?
She said that she noticed that at $2000/mo (*very good pay in 1939) she was working very steady.
She also noticed that when actors demanded and got $2500/mo, they were often quickly replaced by a newbie for $1500/mo.

I read that she was injured in the fiery broomstick scene.

I know it might not be canon but, in my mind, she (her character) is the textbook definition of a witch. Always will be.

Margaret Hamilton was truly iconic as the Wicked Witch! Her story of getting cast in *The Wizard of Oz* just shows how perfect she was for the role—no one else could have brought that character to life like she did.

She said she loved that story since she was four years old. It had never occurred to me that the Wizard of Oz was older than the screenplay for the movie. Is there an original version of this book out there?
