Back in those days, ‘becoming an expert in everything’ was a lot easier.

Imagine being a male student in 350 BCE and not being able to sit after a “private tutoring” with your teacher…

Titles are hard! Writing the actual body is easy, picking topics and structuring sucks.

There is more information to learn from a single subject today than all their written knowledge

You aren’t Plato my dude.
Vast majority of philosohers and scientist equivalents in that time would be just like people now, researching and spending months or years working on one thing.
Don’t look at the few exceptions who did an insane amount of stuff and think they’re the majority.
Alexander the Great took over a huge chunk of the world
But there was also thousands of other kings and generals at around the same time who never accomplished that much.
The vast majority of people don’t do hugely impressive things, and that’s okay. It’s how societies function. You need the regular foot soldiers and researchers for the Alexander’s and Plato’s to rise

Being an expert in medicine today: oh my god I have to learn about every single piece of human anatomy and understand so many diseases and disorders so I can hopefully be able to understand exactly how the body works to the best of our knowledge and be able to diagnose exactly what’s happening to my patients
Being an expert in medicine in 350 BC: idk dude maybe you have too much blood in you lmao

Dude being a philosopher in 500bc sounds completely free.
Like, King Xyolophone: declares that “all babies should be killed and men are made from cheese”.
You: ” I don’t believe babies should be killed as maybe there is a greater purpose to life, as we seem to be able to think and do pretty cool things. Also I don’t think we’re cheese because we seem kind of different idk”.
You are now instantly a world renowned philosopher who will be studied for millennia

Yeah well, back than you were a math’s professor if you knew the Pythagorean theorem.
