Fun fact: the Met got the temple because building the Aswan High Dam was going to flood the region anyway, and the temple would have been submerged.
While they were taking it apart, they labeled all the stones with a system so they could reassemble the temple correctly back in NYC, and (if I recall correctly) incidentally discovered similar “how to assemble” markings made on the stones by the original stonemasons.

My dad was a project / contracts manager back in the 70s for a company that did the ironwork and glazing for the new wing on the Met where the temple is displayed. He took my brothers, sister and I in to see it being worked on and we got to see the temple being assembled. It was very exciting.
