A puffer fish washed up ashore

    1. Turns out the spikes are just for “mechanical” defense and don’t inject venom, i.e., pufferfish are only poisonous and not also venomous. The poison is indeed in their flesh (liver, ovaries, and less so in the skin). So… how to dolphins get high on them anyway? I thought they were taking hits from the spikes, never saw them take a bite as far as I could tell.

    2. I’ve caught dozens of Atlantic puffers over the years. It is the only fish in my region that I have and never will handle without gloves. Not worth the risk of the effects they can cause on humans.

    3. Take your flip flops off, grab it with that. Or a beach towel. Or a piece of seaweed. What is this?!

    4. Legitimate thought, couldn’t you just shovel the rocks towards the water with the fish along with them? Then you wouldn’t have to poke yourself, at it would get in the water faster.

    5. If that fish is spitting water, I’d suspect it has just been alarmed by being captured by a group of guys wanting to put it on social media. It didn’t end up on the beach by accident.

    6. Oh look! It’s a dying fish trying it’s best to survive! Soo interesting how I got no sense of sympathy at all

    7. Taking a puffer fish out of the water when it is puffed up results in air in its body that I cannot get out on its own. If this puffer fish actually washed up on shore, that is tragic, but it’s exceedingly likely that this group of people all standing around it grabbed it and put it on the shore for a picture. If they put it back in the water without waiting for it to deflate and helping the air out manually, it will die. So many people don’t know this, but these people likely unknowingly killed this fish.

    8. I was so scared he was really going to pick him up by those delicate looking fins! They look like they’d rip right off 🥺

    9. In Japan this fish is considered a delicacy. It is eaten raw. However it can be extremely toxic to humans if not prepared properly. In fact, chefs who want to use it have to get a special license to know how to butcher it so the toxins don’t transfer to the customer. There have been countless accounts of people dying after improperly preparing this fish. BTW it is delicious.
