Someone said It best – we yearn for the past not because it was perfect , but because it was when we were young and carefree and /or still full of hopes and dreams .
It has little to do with the historical realities of the time period they are talking about .

There are a number of historians who claim their own pet ancient society was a beacon of enlightenment.

I love that anecdote that is attributed to Isaac Asimov (no idea if it actually happened):
He was with his wife at a dinner party and she commented how nice it would have been to live 100 years before, as it would been so much easier and cheaper to get servants.
He replied: *”100 years ago WE would have been the servants!”*

The ancient past was great back when ancient aliens shared all their fancy tech with humanity.

My favorite one is people with greek philosophers pfps (almost certainly a 14 year old) explaining to me how Nazi Germany was so much more based and sigma than woke America.
Lol. If they lived during that time they would be drafted as cannon fodder to the Soviets in 1945.

I like to remind these people of the lack of toilet paper and that when you would have to go to the toilet at night you did your busyness in a bowl besides your bed and slept next to it
yes, good times

The funny thing is, they always come with the argument of “but I was specifically talking about USA in 80s”. Sure it’s easy to say that the 80s were an amazing time if you ignore the Iran-Iraq war, Soviet-Afghan war, drug cartel violence in Colombia and Mexico etc
