The Counterreformation German Church was happy to burn witches en masse, but outside the HRE not so much. Even the Spanish, which is … unexpected.

    2. And then there’s the possession at Loudoun.

    3. I miss the times this sub had explanations in the description or comments … sometimes you see some from some kind commenters. Pepperidge farm remembers.

(Didn’t know the church had something other to say about witchcraft and I still don’t know … exactly)

Edit: lol even after reading the comments, I don’t have any clue what church said this xD and when and where hahahaha

The peak of witch persecution was in the late 16th and the first half of the 17th century. There were more witches burned in protestant areas than catholic ones. For instance: in the Spanish Netherlands it was the short-lived Calvinist Republic of Ghent that has the greatest amount of witch burnings. A similar pattern can be observed in the Holy Roman Empire. The main reason for the increase of witches being burned seems to be the general chaos and turmoil of that time period, with the 30 years war in the German areas and the 80 years war in the Netherlands.
