    1. British sailors on HMS Dolphin, who were arguably the first Europeans to land on Tahiti, were proposed by some islanders to trade some of their ironware like nails for sex. Popular myth has it that they even started ripping nails of their ship for the trade that the commanding officer had to leave the island quickly.
