    1. History is written by everyone and curated by people on charge. Winning might help you be in charge, but if you are just getting raided by some illiterate nomads you’ll probably get to write down hoe much they suck in-between.

    2. History is written by everyone alive today. There is a difference between “history“ and “the past“. History is the narrative about the past and it can change.

Drastic example: Three years from now, the majority of Western society could just decide that Hitler was right. It would change the entire narrative about the past and thus it would change what we teach as history. It wouldn’t change what happened in the past though.

This is also why history is pretty different depending on where you are, even when talking about the same events. Russia’s WWII history is different from Canada’s, which is different from Germany’s, which is different from Poland’s, etc.

“written by the victors“ grinds my gears because it’s demonstrably false, but it is often used as an excuse by neonazis to accuse certain countries of it or call the current narrative around the holocaust, slavery, etc. into question. We REALLY need to retire that saying.

    3. History is written by the people in charge, who are usually the victors until another set of victors puts themselves in charge.

    4. I think I agree. Writers are “allowed” to write history in societies that were made by the surviving victors who were “righteous”.
