“And what will the law require citizens who want to vote do? Lacking a passport or other proof of citizenship with their married names, they must produce both a birth certificate (with the seal of the state where it was issued; no copies allowed) and a current form of identification—both with the exact same name on them. That could instantly disqualify about 90 percent of all married women without passports or other proof that matches their birth certificates or proof of a legal name change.
For women in that situation, they can still register to vote if they can prove that they went to court to change their name when they got married, but most women just start using their new married name without ever going through all those formalities (although a few states recognize marriage as a legal name change).”

This is why riders to legislation should not be allowed. If a piece of legislation cannot pass on its own accord, then it should never be allowed to be tacked onto much larger legislations.
Unfortunately, both sides benefit from this so we’ll never see this behavior being prohibited.

My husband and I chose a new surname when we got married for personal reasons. We both still have our maiden names on our birth certificates, and our married names on our IDs. We’re both native born US citizens who’ve lived our whole lives in the US, and we’d both be ineligible under this law. Fortunately we both have passports and we both went through social security to change our names so it’s fully above board and we’d probably be allowed anyway, but what bullshit. This has to be some of the most broad reaching and naked voter suppression attempted at the federal level in quite some time.

I saw that an estimated 9% of voters don’t have the documents necessary to vote under the SAVE act. Meanwhile, a review of 23.5 million votes from the 2016 election found 30 undocumented votes. The GOP is trying to dismiss 9% of voters to prevent a handful of votes from undocumented immigrants. Keep in mind, there’s no widespread voter fraud that would affect election results, and close elections face audits and recounts already to ensure the results. All of this talk of voter fraud is a thinly veiled attempt to make voting harder, mostly for low-income and minority voters that don’t have the necessary documents
