      From the royal palaces website.

“The sword of state from 1541

Material: The hilt is of carved and polished iron. On the knob and pommel are lion patterns. The hilt is wound with gilded silver wire.

      The older sword of state

Material: The hilt, pommel and parrying rod were probably made in Sweden shortly before 1540. The hilt is covered in light blue velvet with gold embroidery

The 1541 sword was commissioned in Augsburg for Gustav Vasa. Scenes from the Old Testament and Vasa’s coat of arms are etched on the blade.

The shape of the blade on Gustav Vasa’s older sword shows that it was made earlier than 1541. The sword’s etched decoration shows scenes from Roman history.”

I don’t know why, but it always give me pause, contemplating a handheld artifact, knowing that the hands that once held it are now dust.
