    1. There will be a lot of assumptions, so I can chime in as an owner of an antique Chinese pillow, [but made out of wood](https://i.imgur.com/rqhj8Ai.jpg).

Such pillows (with curves like in my link) only ceased to be used in the past hundred years, but saw a drop over the last 200 years.

In traditional Chinese beliefs a “cool” brain when sleeping promotes health. Therefore pillows used to be hard, and often cool surfaces. However, they were not designed or intended to rest one’s head. Rather they were props under one’s neck, with a person’s head resting behind it on the bed.

In some other cases, some were designed as head props for noblewomen with wild hairdos. Those ones would have the head rested on them, preventing their hair from greeting flattened.

In the case of this ceramic, when compared to the more curvy wooden one I have that I linked to, this one just looked f’ed up nasty, no matter how a person uses it. But this type wasn’t the norm.
