“[Binding](https://www.themorgan.org/manuscript/119041): Original German gilt silver and jeweled book cover attached to compartmented wooden board; ornamented with figures of the Virgin and saints in high relief; possibly containing saint’s relics. Written and illuminated at the Benediktinerabtei Weingarten between 1215 and 1217. Decoration: 21 full-page, 5 half-page, and 2 small miniatures; 6 full-page illuminated texts; 19 historiated initials; numerous decorated initials; many with gold- and silver-leaf, some highly burnished.”

Information on the [Sacramentary](https://www.themorgan.org/collection/berthold-sacramentary): “The Sacramentary is named after Berthold, the abbot of Weingarten from 1200–1232 who commissioned it. From every point of view the codex (ca. 1215–17)—whether for its cover, illuminations, or even script—is the masterpiece of Weingarten illumination. It is also the most luxurious German manuscript of the time and a major monument of Romanesque art. Although the manuscript was formerly known as the Berthold Missal it is, in fact, a Sacramentary. Unlike the Missal (which has all of the texts recited by the priest at Mass), the Sacramentary contains only those for the celebrant of high Mass. The book still retains its original jeweled binding, which includes representations of the abbey’s patron saints (Martin and Oswald) and Abbot Berthold himself.”

    2. How many times has it been plundered and repaired? Several different types of stone settings. Amazing that it’s survived mostly intact!

    3. Beautiful! I guess those are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John at the four corners because I see their mascots, bull, eagle, lion, and person-type creature (idk which one goes with which though)
