A lot of the time, pirates were after more mundane stuff than treasure.

Benjamin Hornigold was an infamous English pirate who operated in the Caribbean at the tail end of the Golden Age of Piracy. He helped establish the Republic of Pirates in Nassau. In 1717, he and his crew captured and boarded a merchant ship, and sheepishly explained to the terrified crew that all they wanted was their hats, as they’d thrown their own hats overboard the previous night while drunk.

Hornigold’s first mate at the time was a man named Edward Teach. You probably know him as Blackbeard.
