It’s wholesome that he cared so much about his dog that he bit the bullet and sold his cards, but extremely unwholesome that he had to do it in the first place. Either the parents were making him choose between two things in his life that he loves or the vet bills were so astronomical (they absolutely shouldn’t be) that this was one of the family’s only choices to save the dog.
