Am I the only one whose been using the singular forms of they/them for anyone and everyone for the last like 20 years?

The only organic/spontaneous “they” is when there’s more than one person.

I have an honest question. But first some context: I’ve been a huge language nerd for a long time and occasionally get a bit overzealous about proper grammar. Using singular they just sounded strange to my ear. Then I read more about the experiences of non-binary people. (Much of it on Imgur.) I realized that the importance of me having to adjust to a new use of a word I’d used in a certain way all my life paled in comparison to the benefits to non-binary people. /1

Why is this getting downvotes? Clearly getting addressed as “they” is important to OP. I’m happy for them.

I remember how good it felt the first time I got an organic she without a mask. It’s wonderful that you are getting to experience this!

Oh this meme gives me nostalgia.

Didn’t know gender is important to them. Didn’t know they walk around in public. This is crazy news to me, and I don’t know why nobody else is talking about it. Bots (like OP) walking around in public and getting into conversations.

Sad that someone had the dark empathy to facilitate a delusion. May you get the help you need 🙏
