    1. Your grandfather wears the Shell and Flame insignia which designates his US Army Branch – Ordinance.

      The Shell and Flame is considered the oldest US Army Insignia.

      He’s wearing his Army dress uniform. Perhaps he is wearing is 2nd Lieutenant bars, but does not yet have the gold strap on the cap normally worn by officers.

      He’s also wearing a Sam Brown belt, later discontinued to save leather for other uses
