Background : The man in this picture is Thomas Alexandre Dumas ( 1762-1806 ) who served in the French army during the revolutionary wars and under Napoleon during his wars as the country‘s first black general in history.His son Alexandre Dumas would later go on to become a world famous novelist writing classics such as „The Three Musketeers or „The Count of Monte Christo“.

Dumas wasn’t Haitian, though, he was born in Saint-Domingue, a colony of France, and never spent any time in an independent Haiti from its independence in 1804 until his death in 1806.
