Are we reading the same fiction? Because in my experience, “heretics” are depicted in a far more sympathetic light than the authorities, whether they be Protestant or Catholic

Cathars were dangerous, they taught that the material world is an evil thing created by an evil deity. Basically old gnosis, a dangerous cult. If this ideology were spread through the world…just terrible.
