Benjamin Harrison lost re-election to Grover Cleveland in 1892, the economy dipped in 1893. Grover Cleveland was one of the most unpopular men in America by the end of his second term, while Harrison was now respected and McKinley, who sponsored the hated McKinley Tariff, got elected President in 1896.

Harrison basically pulled a Coolidge before Coolidge. In this case, the voters instead of himself did the favor of saving his reputation.
