The Achaemenid Persian Empire was known for making use of auxiliary armies raised from conquered regions. Something a lot of people forget about the Greco-Persian wars is that the armies of the Persians also included Greeks from city states who had bent the knee. In fact, the battle of Platea, one of the deciding battles of the second Persian war, saw a recorded 20’000 Greeks fighting on the side of the Persians. That’s half the size of the entire coalition of Greek allies on the opposing side of this battle. Sparta and Athens were the two leaders of the defensive coalition and were the largest providers of soldiers, but many other smaller Greek states still allied with them.

To learn more about the Greco-Persian wars, I highly recommend the series “King of Kings” from the podcast *Hardcore History* by Dan Carlin. For an overview, [Wikipedia is always nice.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Persian_invasion_of_Greece)
